Installing Ubuntu 17.10 VMware Workstation Guest Machine

Ubuntu is a free opensource operating system that runs on your desktop / laptop or in the cloud. Anyone can get a copy, install and own it forever without paying a single penny. However, Ubuntu’s parent company may ask for a small donation while downloading the ISO image file from online.

When you’re ready to install Ubuntu, the first thing you’ll want to do is download its ISO image file from online. In the past, there were options to order and request a CD/DVD disc. However, the program may have ended.

Now your only option now is to download the image file and boot from it.

Step 1: Download Ubuntu

To download Ubuntu, visit its download page. Download the ISO image onto the host computer you have VMware Workstation Pro installed on. After downloading the image, you should be able to boot the guest machine from it.

There select the Desktop image and download.

The recommended system requirements for Ubuntu as list below:

  • 2 GHz dual core processor or better
  • 2 GB system memory
  • 25 GB of free hard drive space
  • Either a DVD drive or a USB port for the installer media
  • Internet access is helpful

Step 2: Create A Guest Machine

Step 3: Install Ubuntu

Now that you’ve downloaded the image and created a new guest machine, add the ISO image to the guest machine to boot from it. To add the ISO image, select the guest machine and select and click VM –> Settings from the host software menu.

Then select CD/DVD (SATA) from the device list and to the right, select the option to Use ISO image: Then browse the select the ISO image and Save. Power on the guest machine and in most cases, you should see Ubuntu installation wizard screen.

Then choose to Install Ubuntu

Click Continue. If you have a reliable and stable Internet connection, then select the box to Download updates while installing Ubuntu as well as to install third-party software for graphic and Wi-Fi, MP3 and other media.

Next, choose to Erase disk and install Ubuntu. This options is the default and it erases all data and program on the disk before installing Ubuntu.

Choosing the option above will prompt you with the screen below to confirm that you want to delete everything on the disk and install Ubuntu on it. if it’s true, click Continue.

Next, choose your timezone on the map or type the city / state you live. if the city or state is recognized and identified you should continue. if not select the closest city or state to you, then continue.

Next, choose your Keyboard layout and continue. You may drag the screen to the left to see the continue button.

Then type your name, computer name, pick a username and password and click Continue

After that Ubuntu should begin installing on the computer. Wait for the installation to complete.

After installing, click Reboot Now to complete the installation.

Restart and login and start using Ubuntu!

After installing the OS, open the command terminal and install the guest machine open source software.

sudo apt-get install open-vm-tools-desktop
