This article explains the steps you can take to display the weather information on the Top menu bar in Ubuntu Linux.
By default, Ubuntu Linux displays the system time in a 24-hour or military time format. The only information on the Top menu bar is the clock. If you want, you can add weather info as well so you know what the current weather condition is.
There are no easy and quick buttons to add weather info on the top menu bar. One must install additional packages to make that happen.
To get Ubuntu Linux to display the weather information on the Top menu bar, you’ll need to install the Gnome Weather package and Weather O’Clock extension.
Show weather information on the Top menu bar
As described above, by default, Ubuntu doesn’t show the current weather conditions on the Top menu bar. If you want to display weather info, you must install additional packages, and the steps below show you how.
Install Gnome Weather package
As I said before, it’s not easy displaying weather forecasts on your desktop in Ubuntu Linux. You must install additional packages, and one of them is Gnome Weather.
To install, open the Ubuntu Software Center, then search for Gnome Weather.
Alternatively, you can use the Terminal app to install Gnome Weather.
First, open the Terminal app in Ubuntu Linux.
You can do that by pressing the Super key (or Windows key) to show the Overview screen. Then use the search box to search for ‘Terminal‘.
Select the Terminal app to launch.
Alternatively, press the keyboard shortcut (CTRL + ALT + T) on your keyboard to launch the Terminal app.
When the Terminal app opens, type the commands below to install the Gnome Weather app.
sudo apt install gnome-weather
Once the app is installed, open it. You can do that by pressing the Super key (or Windows key) to show the Overview screen. Then use the search box to search for ‘Gnome Weather‘.
When the app opens, set your location or city to display the weather forecast.
Install Weather O’Clock Extension
Now that Gnome Weather is installed, you must install another package or extension to display the weather information of the city you selected using the Gnome Weather app.
Open the Ubuntu Software Center again and search for Extension Manager. Install the Extension Manager manager.
After installing the extension manager, go and open it.
You can do that by pressing the Super key (or Windows key) to show the Overview screen. Then use the search box to search for ‘Extension Manager.
Once the app opens, browse the install the Weather O’Clock extension as highlighted below.
Once you install the extension, the weather information of your city should now appear on the Top menu bar in Ubuntu Linux.
That should do it!
