This article explains how to change your OneDrive Personal Vault inactivity lockout time in Windows 11.
The OneDrive app lets you sync files and folders on your computer with Microsoft Cloud. It allows you to access them anywhere on your mobile devices and other computers using the service.
By default, your OneDrive Personal Vault will automatically lock after a period of inactivity in Windows. That inactivity lockout time is set to 20 minutes by default.
Before your Vault is automatically locked, you will get a notification around 5 minutes before the 20 minutes expire. You can use the notification pop-up to extend the time and continue using files in your Vault or allow your Vault to lock.
If the default 20 minutes is not enough, you can change OneDrive settings to lock your Vault after 1 hour, 2 hours, or 4 hours of inactivity.
Below is how to change how soon your OneDrive Personal Vault automatically locks.
Change how soon your OneDrive Personal Vault automatically locks
As described above, if your OneDrive Personal Vault is automatically locking out too soon, you can change the timeout period by extending the default 20 minutes.
Here’s how to do that.
First, open the OneDrive settings pane. You can access the Settings page by clicking the OneDrive icon on the Taskbar (Taskbar overflow) and selecting the gear -> Settings on the context menu.
One can also access OneDrive settings by going to the OneDrive folder in Windows File Explorer. Then, on the top right menu bar, expand the OneDrive button and select the Settings gear.
When the OneDrive settings pane opens, select Account on the left menu. Then under Personal Vault, choose one of the following values:
- Lock Personal Vault after:
- 20 Minutes
- 1 Hour
- 2 Hours
- 4 Hours
You can close the Settings window after your changes.
Change OneDrive Personal Vault Inactivity Timeout Period via Windows Registry
Yet another way to change your OneDrive inactivity timeout period in Windows 11 is to use the Windows Registry Editor.
First, open the Windows Registry, and navigate to the folder key path below.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\OneDrive
If you don’t see the OneDrive folder key, right-click on the Microsoft key, then create the subkey (OneDrive) folders.
Right-click the OneDrive folder key’s right pane and select New -> DWORD (32-bit) Value. Next, type a new key named VaultInactivityTimeout.
Double-click the new key item name (VaultInactivityTimeout) and make sure the Base option is Decimal, and then update the Value data:
- For 20 minutes, type: 0
- For 1 hour, type 1
- For 2 hours, type 2
- For 4 hours, type 4
Save your changes and restart your computer.
That should do it!
