Create VirtualBox Guest Machine on Ubuntu 17.04 | 17.10

Few days ago we showed students and new users how to install VirtualBox 5.2 on Ubuntu. That post can be found here. Today’s post shows you how to create a new guest operating system after installing VirtualBox host software.

For those who don’t, VirtualBox is a virtualization software that allows technical professionals to install and run multiple x86-based Windows, Linux and Mac operating systems simultaneously on the same host machine.

You can create and run guest operating systems inside a window of the host computer. This is a powerful software and I’d recommend every technical professional to obtain a copy to use to create test environments where applications and other software settings can be tested.

To create a new guest machine, follow the steps below:

Step 1: Install VirtualBox

To create VirtualBox guest machines you must first install VirtualBox host software. We’ve shown you how to do it on Ubuntu. Follow the link below to install learn how to install VirtualBox 5.2.

Step 2: Create New Guest Machines.

Now that you’ve installed VirtualBox is installed, follow the method below to create new guest machine. For this tutorial, we’re going to be creating new Ubuntu desktop guest machine.

To do that, click Machine –> New  from VirtualBox Host software. This should open the guest machine creation wizard. Use the screenshots below to help.

Then choose a descriptive name for the virtual machine you’re creating. Then choose the type of operating system and the version you want to install. Click Next when done.

Next, select the maximum memory size you want to use for the virtual machine. The recommended size is a good place to start. Click Next to continue.

Then create a hard disk to use for the virtual machine. The default is 10GB for Ubuntu 32-bit system. Click Create to continue.

Next, select VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image) option from the list an continue.

Make the hard disk dynamic and click Next. Dynamic hard disk will file will only use the space on your physic hard disk as it fills up to the maximum.

Finally, type a descriptive name for the hard disk drive and click Create.

This will create a blank virtual machine ready to be used to install Ubuntu Desktop.
